After graduating from East in 1969 I attended the U of U and got a BS in Nutrition Science, specializing in Dietetics. Following graduation from the U, I married Gregory Monson. He was halfway through a 4 year graduate program in Cambridge, Massachusetts so I moved there and did an internship at Massachusetts General Hospital as a Dietitian our first year. The second year we had the first of our 5 children. After Greg's graduation we moved back to Salt Lake where he practiced law. Our first home was at 1221 East 8th South directly north of East High. We lived there for 3 years, had another 2 kids and then built a home in my old neighborhood in the upper Avenues where we had 2 more kids and have now lived for 39 years. I married a guy from Highland, went to East and all of our kids graduated from West High because of boundary changes in the 80's.
Probably the most exciting and interesting thing I have done since the last reunion was to live in Slovenia for a year and a half (March 2017-September 2018) on a service mission with my husband after he retired from his law practice. Our mission had 5 countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro), 4 currencies (Slovenia euro, Croatia kuna. Bosnian mark and Serbian dinar), 3 languages (Slovene, Croatian and Serbian), 2 alphabets (roman and Cyrillic), and all in 1 mission. It was quite an adventure! Slovenia was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. It is just below Austria on the north and shares the Julian Alps. On the west it borders Italy and has a small border on the Adriatic sea. To the South was Croatia with it's beautiful coast and waterfalls and to the east was Hungary. We loved the people and especially loved serving with the young Sisters and Elders and helping them as they taught and became our new family away from home. We worked with the youth and young adults so we able to travel throughout the mission in our assignment. We returned last September and look forward to visiting the area again. I would suggest Slovenia and Croatia be added to everyone's bucket list. I guarantee you will not be disappointed in this hidden gem of Europe.
We love to travel and love spending time with our family.
We look forward to seeing all of you at the 50th reunion in September!
