It was a great time seeing so many people that I haven't seen in years!! I do try to send my business to those that I know, and would enjoy being able to do that more often. I think many others would do the same, so it looks like the idea has some good possibilities. I will keep watching for any changes that may come. Thanks again for all the work that has gone into this. Dave

I think Ladene's comment about Doug and me making fun of her name requires some explanation. Ladene' middle name is Muriel. It was two adolescent boys awkward attempt to flirt with a stunningly beautiful girl who we thought looked like Edie Adams. This film clip will add some context.

Why don't you smoke one up and pick it sometime?

Apparently, sometimes a cigar isn't just a cigar, eh Dan?
Got any old Noxema ads?

Per request. This drove 13 year old boys crazy. I hope you were not requesting the zit soap for girls.

That's what I'm talking! Worked for me. I bought tons if the stuff. Noxzema, not cigars.

Good grief, I went to work this morning with that Noxema ditty playing in my brain ad nauseum. Wouldn't go away. Thanks a lot guys.

As long as you don't start dancing to it...that would be trouble. Start thinking the Pepsodent jingle instead.

(Without apology to Ms. Adams' cigars or the Noxema commercial, I need to provide my dear friend Peggy with s-o-m-e-t-h-i-n-g else to rattle around in her head)

Unfortunately for those of you who have been the unwilling recipients of my oft-acerbic cynicism on this website, I have taken great literary license over the past several months. While it has all been in great fun, I could never hope to compete with Mssrs. Adamson, Brown, Stevens, etc. Nevertheless, as my birthday takes me one timid step closer to qualifying for ‘Senior Discounts’ at the local Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, I feel compelled to share this expose’ on our collective infirmities. (Incidentally, in my advanced years, I have absolutely no recollection of its source.)

(Sung to that old favorite from ‘The Sound of Music’)

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak, when the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don’t feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin’,
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin’,
And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I’ve had,
And then I don’t feel . . . so bad.

ANYONE who dares venture through the Boise area: please honor me with a visit. My very best to all!

Merry Christmas to all in just three short days... And Happy New Year... here's hoping it's much better than the last one!

Jim, thanks for the new update of the way things are getting to be...to "The Sound Of Music" & thank goodness we have our memories of what once was.
Commercial jingles and all. Trust Dan and John to bring up ol cigar and noxzema jingles... anyone remember the Shaving Ad signs along the road as you went on family vacations. OR How about old EHS cheer leading songs and phrases... We're from the East High couldn't be prouder IF you can't hear us now we'll yell a little LOUDER! We're from East High mighty mighty EAST HIGH... or What What What say who?
Are we really waiting five years to see the young faces we once knew so long ago??? No simple catch up like a picnic in the park? Or barbeque in the canyon to catch up on last year's reunion or missed reunion(s) for those who couldn't make it?? Sure hope we don't lose to many more of our classmates we only see at reunions as we go along life's winding road.

Unfortunately, I have sobering news to share.  Not only have we lost a number of our peers from high school, but in perusing the profiles of our classmates, several of us have experienced the pain and trauma of losing one of our children as well.  Another of our members had one of his daughters, and the mother of four of his grandchildren, pass away in early May.  He is a gentle, quiet, and private enough person that he would never draw attention to himself.  But sharing in this event with him once again reinforced upon me how fragile our existence on this Earth can be, and how absolutely essential it is to recognize, and appreciate, that which is truly important.

To my sincere regret, high school became a blur in the rear-view mirror before I gained the self-confidence, perspective, and maturity to truly appreciate many of my classmates.  On so many levels and in so many ways, I am deeply indebted to you.  I hope, through birthday wishes and/or phone calls, I can adequately express what I either accidentally or intentionally avoided doing in the past.  I hope also that I can be a better friend during the next 40 years than I have been during the past 40.

So networking for work is always a good idea.  LinkedIn connections work as well, though I haven't had many folks ping my profile when they have a common high school but the U of U does show up regularly with profiles of graduates, just from kids that graduated since 85.

Though the Boise market is as depressed as any market in regards to high tech positions, there are marketing firms with Fortune 500 connections listed regularly.

Today is NOv. 2, 2010... on the classmate news front: Peggy Scott suffered a fall on a biking trek in the islands of Greece, breaking a hip and clavicle. She'd been air ambulanced/jet retrofitted (they took out 9 seats for her gurney and family and medical entourage) home where she now rests relatively comfortably in the Cortez, CO hospital where she works.

She says she's very happy to be home, has lots of help when she gets to her house, don't know if she'll need surgery yet but hanging in with her usual amazing resilience and resolve.

If you're a Facebooker, you can find her and there are a number of pictures of her in her hospital bed while Halloween-clad staffers gather around and no doubt razz the poor thing.

I think she'd love a ping through this site. She's up nights and asleep days for now...so ping her.

I hope all Leopards had a happy Halloween. See you maybe at the mini fest next summer. (Marv...your turn there I do believe).

I just got off the phone with Steve Lindgren and his wife Chris. He has had over 20 surgeries in his lifetime, most of them on his neck. Most recently he had a surgery that CUT his SPINAL CORD and limited his mobility from the waist down. He has MOVEMENT in his left leg but he's going thru THERAPY to learn to walk again. He needs our PRAYERS and CONSTANT ENCOURAGEMENT. His email is: stevel505@cableone.net and his home phone is: 1-505-867-0836. Chris went to SOUTH High and also to SKYLINE and they've been married almost 40 YEARS! Please CALL or email them. I know he'd LOVE to hear from y'all!

Here's something I wrote today to Eric Orem regarding HIGHLAND HIGH, then AND now: I appreciate your friendship too. Be watchin' your mailbox for something SPECIAL that should arrive before Thanksgiving. You might be able to show the family that at one time you were YOUNG, FEARLESS and NOT HAIRLESS! You and Millburn-what a pair!(Where did you get those EYES? No wonder Olivette FELL for you!)
Do you remember that after we had lost to WEST and went to play HIGHLAND, our confidence had been shaken and we had some SELF DOUBTS about if we were really as BAD ASS as our UNDEFEATED Junior Varsity Season would indicate-well at least I had those thoughts-you were ALWAYS more confident,(think Singing 'Old Man River' at that Final Assembly-I've always ADMIRED you for that!)
The 1st played called was an End Sweep where you and I DOUBLED TEAMED that big Defensive End named Peterson. I remember walking up to the line and you asked "do you want him High or Low?" "I'll take LOW you take HIGH!" We hit that guy like TWO FREIGHT TRAINS and either Lindgren or Mavor went for NINE YARDS on the FIRST PLAY from Scrimage. We walked back to the huddle thinkin' WE'RE BACK and we're BAAAD! We learned alot about ourselves that day, at least I did. You may also recall that we had heard that DESORBIO and a couple of the other guys had "put out a BOUNTY on us"- FIFTY BUCKS for each of us OR $150 for BOTH of you and I together! Wilk will tell you that I was VERY SOLEMN the night before we played, so much that I wasn't even interested in makin' out!(-Boy I must been AFRAID!) I thought my Football Career could end the NEXT DAY!It's too bad I had to take it out on Mike Coulam, their Star Running Back. I hit him so hard that it coulda KNOCKED him into the middle of NEXT WEEK! He FUMBLED the ball and it was SCOOPED up by Pete Baldwin for our FIRST of MANY SCORES that day! In HIS DEFENSE, he hit me almost as HARD as you did that day we BOTH SAW STARS!;0) In fact if STRASSER, CLIFFORD and McCARTHY hadn't picked me up, I'd STILL be layin' there-don't tell him or WILK that.
We had a STRONG, COMPETATIVE TEAM and we should have taken STATE that year. (Millburn still contends that we should NOT have had to play SKYLINE again since we had BEATEN them to a PULP the first time we played them 27-7 and Terry McCarthy went to his grave saying that WEST NEVER crossed the Goal Line!)
Did you hear that HIGHLAND won the 4A State CHAMPIONSHIP yesterday by ONE point? Talk about having having some "Bad ASS" Linebackers and Lineman, that team has 'em! (I can hear MRS. COULAM sayingNICE TALK ELDER!-she's the FORMER Ann WILKINSON)...Mike Coulam has to have a GRIN from EAR to EAR! They've waited a LONG time for that and they deserve it!
Your friend,
Brian 'BROOM'

I'm bi-sacksual; are you?

On the eve of my big 6-oh, oh (as my dear friend Ann Coulam {who never spoke to me 40 years ago and still WON'T...some things never change [tag, you're IT, Ann]} refers to the date that unceremoniously ushers one into the world of restaurant discounts and hopefully lower cholesterol), I feel compelled to share another venture into my twisted mind as I attempt to emulate Nightline's 'Sign of the Times'.  NOTE:  This is a collaborative effort, if only I could remember who I collaborated with...  (Important note:  What follows is a COMMENTARY on technology, not an autobiography; I don't 'toot' any more often than absolutely necessary!)

When I bought my Blackberry I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.

That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends messages to my cell phone and every other program within the texting world.

My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage inside my golf bag.

The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth (which, by the way, is red) phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone within 50 feet was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.

I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that thing was the most annoying, rudest person I have ever ‘met’! Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lat-ing." You would think she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a right turn instead… Well, it was not a good relationship.

When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and although she is starting to develop the same tone as ‘Gypsy’, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.

To be perfectly honest, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets whenever the phone rings.

The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could decide on something themselves, but this sudden "paper or plastic?" every time I check out just confuses me. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them into the store with me.

Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "paper or plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look.

Someone recently asked if I tweet. I answered, “No, but I toot a lot."

The first thing I want to say is how THANKFUL I am to our Catholic friends, our Baptist friends, our Church of Christ friends and our Mormon friends who were willing to add Steve and Chris Lindgren to their PRAYER LIST and to be involved in a FAST for them as well as for: 1)Peggy Scott, whose Collarbone has healed and is having great strength added to her broken pelvis & she could be off crutches in LESS than a month. 2) Gregg and Kris Johnson who received a CLEAN BILL of HEALTH today for his CANCER! 3) Teri Lambourne Arnold just told me that CHIP is recovering nicely from his Lumbar surgery and has been on a Business Trip today for EIGHT HOURS between the plane and the car!
We had somewhere between 50 and 75 brothers and sisters with STRONG FAITH involved in our FAST and I want you to know the GOOD LORD has heard our prayers...read on--- On Thu, 1/13/11, chris lindgren <stevel505@cableone.net> wrote:
Bryan - the hospital is looking to admit me for 4-6 weeks in the next two weeks.  I'll send you a email once I know the date. The good news is as follows:My right leg has been very slow to respond.  The thigh muscles started to improve mid December. On 12/31/31 I was able to move my right foot for the first time.

Physical Therapy started working to put me on the parallel bars to walk end of January. I got on the bars 1/4 and walked for the first time since surgery. I had to have 2 spotters and at best they were baby steps. On 1/11 I walked using a walker, once again, small steps and only 24 ft at best.

This is why they now want to admit me to the hospital for a month. Goal will be to have me shaving and brushing my teeth standing.  Walking on my own 50-75 ft. Once out of hospital I will continue out patient to improve upon my walking.

Will keep you posted.

...also had a BLACK on BLACK '56 Olds 88 with TRI POWER, a '58 Olds, a '57 PONTIAC Star Chief that was MINT GREEN and White. Bill Bjorndal, Steve's dad had a PINK '57 or '58 CADILLAC, Grandma Leonard had a '64 Cadillac. Frank Millburn had a '62 Ram BLUR Wagon and a '63 Maroon BUICK LeSabre. Mark Millburn got a BRONZE and CREME '56 Bel Air and Clayton Wilkinson Sr had a RED '68 and a Lime Green Metallic '69 Riviera as well as Mable Jean's Blue '67 Mustang Convertible with a white top. Dick and Marge Eastmond had a White Plymouth Satellite with a FOUR Speed before they got a Maroon ''63 or '64 Riviera and Riki later got a White BARRACUDA. I forgot what Tina had. John Adamson's dad, Jack had a Blue  '64 Metallic Skylark that John could be seen cruisin' around with Peggy Scott and a few others!

Sherie Sorbonne's parents had a Blue or Black Cadillac Limousine and Becky Carr's parents had a TEAL Blue/Green '63-'64 Caddy that she drove occasionally. Becky Thayne's mom, Emma Lou had a GREEN '68 Fairlane or Torino. Mike Fielden and I each had a White '63 Impala at one time and Steve Lingren's dad, NORM used to drive us around in a Ford STATION WAGON. Many of the NELSON girls drove the White VISTA CRUISER like you see on "The '70's Show" but I remember Gloria coming in several times to Spence Blake's American gas station to get fuel. It seems that Ann Wilkinson's first car was a VW BUG-I didn't know she was SHIFTY 'til I heard that she learned to drive a STICK SHIFT from her brother Clayton!

Ron Clifford had a BLACK on BLACK on BLACK '67 Camaro Convertible before he got his SILVER '67 CORVETTE Coupe with the 427 and Side PIPES. Steve Garrett had a East High RED/WHITE '56 Bel Air that he bought from Debbie Bonache's brother & later got  a CORVETTE Convertible that was some years later, about '73-'75  (during the OIL EMBARGO) was TRADED EVEN for a VW VAN! Look over the brochures from your First or Second or Third car and tell me about it!

My brother Jay Conway traded traded away Bob's Crocus Yellow on BLACK '56 4 door Bel Air with 3 Speed/OVERDRIVE on the the '65 REGAL RED on WHITE Chevelle Malibu SUPER SPORT with a 350 Horse 327, a 4 Speed and a BAD ATTITUDE in February of '65!

What do YOU remember about  your FIRST car and WHO were you hanging around with? Where did you go: Hires & DEE's on 7th East, The FREEZER or PETE's  on 13th East in Salt Lake City or maybe a HANGOUT in Holiday or SUGAR HOUSE or maybe even the COTTONWOOD Mall? What did you EAT, What did you FEEL? Did you like HIRES Root Beer Better than A & W? What did you put in a Float, was it COKE, Cherry 7 UP, TAB or FRESCA?

Today reminded me that...FORTY TWO YEARS AGO today, SGT PEPPER brought the Band to Play (not really) at the EAST HIGH '69 Graduation! Can you believe it? It does seem like it was just yesterday that we were at the SALT PALACE, (now DEFUNCT) grabbin' our deplomas and heading over to HIRES on 7th East and 4th South to get a greasy Cheese Burger, fries and some of their great ROOT BEER before we went to dance at the State Capitol Bulding Rotunda.

I was heading off to OREGON for the summer to work in a Lumber Mill before going to DeVRY School of Technology, (where I later withdrew.)
I wish I was as FEARLESS and BOLD as I was back then, don't you? I wasn't afraid of anything or anyone. Maybe I'm still fearless, which explains why I would climb up 18 feet into a tree at age 60 only to fall off a ladder and sprain my right foot baad enough to have to take 10 days off work just to recover! Susan says that sometimes I'm about as bright as a 17 year old-was that supposed to be a compliment? I think not! ;0)
What were you thinking back then? "TWENTY-FIVE BUCKS a DAY" was what we felt we needed to be on EASY STREET. If we could just get a job that paid that much, life would be worth livin'. Could we live on that now? Probably not. Remember that gas from Bill Hickey's Beeline and Spence Blake's American was only NINETEEN cents per gallon. Just like John Milner said in AMERICAN GRAFFITTEE "heck, four bucks would give you enough gas to go CRUIZIN' for the whole weekend" now it will barly buy ONE gallon!
Coach Ted Weight is one of the few remaining faculty members who is still with us. You can contact him at 435-628-6122. I know he'd love to hear from you. Gosh, we thought Coach Iman Hales was ANCIENT back in '66 when we first tried out for Sophmore Football-now we're the SAME AGE! Heck some of us even LOOK LIKE him now! (Which reminds me about that video-I suspect that IF we were to assemble again right now...we'd look more like the walrus, (Koo Koo KaChew!) although Fred GROBSTEIN has had quite a resemblance for years!
Forty-two years ago would we have ever thought that Steve Lindgren would have had over TWENTY surgies? Or that the BERLIN wall would come down? Or that the LDS church would be sending missionaries to Poland, East Germany and to MOSCOW? Our former Stake Pres has been called there and he tells us that there are 8 missions in RUSSIA now-can you believe it? There were around 3 million members in '69 and about 11 million now.
I'm sure Miss Lewis (Sophmore English) and Miss Richards (Senior English) are still around because they were close to our age. I'm pretty sure I saw LEFTY BENNETT, (he of KEY CLUB fame) at one of the activities for the 40th Reunion. We saw an OBIT for LaVeral "ROSCOE" Herzog the other day and I hope that Bro Davey, Bro Peterson and several of the other SEMINARY teachers are still with us. They made more of an impact on us than the football coaches did, although the football coaches taught us about perserverence and determination and the importance of following through with each play...and each day. The Seminary teachers taught us to be more CHRIST LIKE. We were fortunate to have had exposure to both because I know of several Relief Society Presidents, Stake Presidents, Mission President, Bishops, Young Men & Young Women leaders as well as Scout and Primary leaders who came out of the Class of '69 from EAST. Seeing the "High School Musicals" reminds me of our heritage & many of us have gone on to be teachers on one level or another & been very successful at it too!
I hope you'll take a minute and share with your family what your dreams and fears were when you graduated.
Sure Love You,
Brian B

Remember the East High 20th reunion musical performance by our own Chris Proctor?  It was 1989 and I was impressed by his talent.  Chris has evolved into an incredible artist.  He recently was on tour and stopped by to visit Kat and me here in Tennessee.  We were fortunate to have the opportunity to host a house concert on the evening of Summer Solstice featuring Chris.  It was a packed house and Chris blew the audience away.  You could have heard a pin drop as he performed.

Chris is not only the best guitarist we have heard, he is a class act.  You folks in SLC are fortunate to have this National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion living in your area.  We will take him in Tennessee anytime he wishes to return.  Chris travels the world doing what he loves.  Check out his concert schedule and music at www.chrisproctor.com.  We also downloaded his music on iTunes.  If Chris is performing in your city, do yourself a favor and enjoy his art.  Bob Rust
