Valorie Hatsis (Powell)

Valorie Clare Hatsis Powell  7/29/51 ~ 12/2/02  Valorie left her struggles behind Dec. 2, 2002 after a lifelong battle with diabetes. Her passing was as easy as her life was hard. Valorie was born July 29, 1951 to Anthony Hatsis and Deborah Blank. She was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church and later converted to the Holy Roman Catholic Church. She was a graduate of West High School and was a Magna Cum Laude graduate from the University of Utah. Member Phi Cappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and Owl & Key. Valorie held many positions during her life, including Associate  Director of the Newman Catholic Center, Genetic Researcher and Associate director of the University of Utah's Drug and Alcohol Education Department. She was always thinking of others and so in 1979, she started the Diabetic Retinopathy Support Group (along with her good friend Jan). Valorie was the last original surviving member. Valorie served on the Catholic Diocesan Commission for the Handicapped. Valorie is survived by her husband Jenkyn Albert Powell; son and daughter-in-law J. Elijah and Brin (Bon) Powell and grandson Noah Everett Powell.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, 1375 East Spring Lane, Thursday, Dec. 5th, at 11 a.m.  Memorial donations in lieu of flowers could please be made to the Utah Council of the Blind or The Catholic Church.  Loving wife, mother, sister and friend, Please Pray for Her.
