Yay, Judy!  Any more lady riders out there?

Friday brunch is at 11, which is why I didn’t bring up Fri.  We could get an early start..... I like Chris’s route. We could leave from East as well!

Yes, let's do Chris's  Emigration Canyon ride on Friday morning.  I would be up for doing another ride on Thursday or Saturday.  I will be staying in Park City but am willing to travel.  Y'all know the territory better than I do since I have not ridden in SLC since the late 70's.

The response to the ride is great.

So if it’s Protor’ ride that’s zoo parking lot 8:30 Friday? Those starting from East starting a bit earlier to get to zoo at 8:30. Someone pointed out that we could make the ride longer. Let me add that those who want can always make it shortet by reversing direction in Emigration before Little Mountain.

I’m in. Let’s me know if time changes. Looking forward to seeing folks.  Del Draper

Meeting at East for bike ride(s) is a great idea. Maybe the parking lot uphill and across 13th East from the school, next to the baseball field? All three days are open for riding if we start early enough on Friday. Showing up sweaty for the women’s brunch may not be appreciated so maybe Friday is more difficult for some.

All those that are golfing at Forestdale, please remember tee times start at 8:00. There will be room for 15 groups.  This will be Friday morning as well with lunch starting at 11:00 at the course.

Only a month left until the Reunion! Time for the Songwriting Contest. (Not really a contest, just for fun)

Rules: Pick any song from our high school era and re-write the lyrics to include memories about favorite friends, teachers, events, sports, hangouts, etc. This can be funny, serious, happy or sad. Just not religious or political. Post yours right here in the Message Forum.

To get you going, here are the lyrics from a couple of our East Songs:

LEOPARD'S SONG

L-is for Leopards all victorious

E-is for East High ever glorious

O-is for the onward way we prosper

P-is for power, we gain by the hour

A-is ambition that spreads o'or us

D-is defiance not defeated

S-is for strength fro East Side High

ON EAST HIGH SCHOOL

On East High School, on East High School

Plunge right through that line,

Round the ball, clear around (name of school)

Touchdown sure this time.

Go on East High School,

Go on East High School,

Fight for your fame.

Fight, East Side, fight, fight, fight,

We'll win this game.

Update on our plans for a bicycle ride.

The ride will be on Thursday leaving from the East High parking lot. We are riding up Emigration Canyon.

Emigration Canyon is an out-and-back ride with a good shoulder (most of the way), and lots of bike traffic, so drivers are aware of our presence.  Total distance from East parking lot to the top of Little Mountain is about 13 miles one way, and about 1500 vertical feet. You can turn around at any time enroute to Little Mountain and shorten the ride, or, if you're feeling frisky, you can extend the ride with an extra three mile downhill (300 vertical foot drop) section that goes to Little Dell Reservoir, from which you'd return the way you came. There are two sets of outhouses along the way, but no water. Malted beverages after the ride are always an option.

This is a ride, not a race so all skill levels are welcone.

Since not everyone can make the ride on Thursday we are planning other rides for those who are interested.  Let me know and I will message you with information.

Props to Chris Proctor for the route descripion.

Hey Dan, loved the catchy jazz rendition of the Leopard Song. I didn't know it's origins until now.

Sorry we’ll miss the reunion. Our 6th and youngest is scheduled for surgery Sep. 3rd.  He is a decathlete at BYU. On recovery he’ll report for missionary service in Hungary. His older siblings have served in Louisiana, Portugal, and 3 in Taiwan.  Who knows - maybe Cindy (Blake) East ‘75 and I are next.

Best to you all,

Ed

I'm going to come golf for sure but I need to sign up for it still. It will be fun to get a pro lesson from you Judy! JK! cool I won't make you do that. I think I better meet the bikers at the base of the canyon not East High. I'll let you know for sure if you need to watch for me on the side of the road!!! I'll be wearing bright red, white and leopard colors! Or maybe my pep club uniform....HaHaHa!

Ed wishing your son a quick recovery. So fun to read all the messages from friends of long ago. I went to Highland Highs reunion last weekend. I didn't even go there and it was great. Good attendance and lots from out of town. Our reunion will be super. There are a few out there that need a push or shove to sign up. I know a few.

PLEASE... if anyone has some good old East High memorabiia down in the basement or up in the attic....please let me know or Nancy Holt Monson! Especially you Brian Brown....you had a ton at the last reunion as I recall.

Later Leopards*&^%$#@!

Class of 69',

I am quite disappointed not to be able to attented, such a hard to believe event that is about to happen, the 50th Reunion of the East High Class of 69'.  I will very much miss reuniteding with many friends.  Everyone have a great time at the 50th Reunion.  My wife and I will be in Toyoko.  In Valdez today.  International Dateline in 4-5 days.  Weather has been very cooperative so far!

Update for those who want to go cycling.  The Thursday ride is on.  We also will be doing a ride on Saturday up City Creek Canyon.  I will let you know about the time and gathering spot.  We are working on a Friday ride for those of us who do not golf. We plan to finish in time to attend the other events.

I can't wait to see all of you in your Lycra.

It’s been a hoot reading all the posts and updates in anticipation of the reunion.  I am reminded of all the hours I spent watching so many of you being 'leopardized,' that uneven initiation onto the path of the good life.  I am nostalgic for all the hours flexible scheduling allowed me to spend in woodshop making breadboards, without ever registering for a class.  No doubt, Dickens had it right.  Now I feel almost caught up, but not yet ensnared; and I am vacillating between eagerness to see some of those I have loved and wanting a refund.

I was hoping to see you all for the 50th, especially since I have missed all other reunions for a variety of reasons.  Unfortunately, I will be in D.C.helping my brother shoot his second short film.  Have fun without me.  I’ll see you in ten years.

Mary and I live in Hong Kong and have only certain times when we can travel back to Salt Lake.  Unfortunately, the dates for the reunion just aren’t possible.  I wish it was otherwise.  At reunion time in 1999, we were in Nagoya, Japan.  In 2009 we were on an assignment that I could not move.  Now, we are out again, but will be back in Utah either next year or the year after.  I have been grateful for the encouragement and invitation to attend, and wish that we could.

As I read each of the memories and comments, I have been unusually nostalgic and remembered so many good times with many of you. I have enjoyed the lyrics by Evan, Steve Rich and Dave Seiler, and found myself remembering the music and feelings we had during those years at East.  I am reminded of those who have passed and those whose spouses have passed away.

With some amusement, I have read the survey results.  John, the survey did not include 8 as a possible number of children.  That is how many we have, with 28 grandchildren.

Our family abruptly moved from California as I started 9th grade, and many of you welcomed me to Salt Lake and then to East High.  I was very grateful to each of you.  We have been able to raise our children with some of you, had our children be good friends with your children, and will feel forever grateful for these associations.

I hope that it is not only a wonderful reunion, but that we have another in 10 more years.  If we do, I promise to come.

Dave Evans
